Prof. Martina L. Contente

Martina L. Contente is an Associate Professor at the Department of Food, Environmental and Nutritional Sciences, University of Milan. She earned her degree in Pharmacy and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at the same institution.

Throughout her career, Martina has gained extensive international experience, working at University College Dublin (Ireland), the University of Nottingham (UK), and on a Roche-funded project at the University of Bern (Switzerland). These opportunities enhanced her expertise in developing intensified and sustainable flow-based bioprocesses for the production of high-value chemicals.

Demonstrating that enzymes can be used as strategic tools in traditional syntheses, via protein immobilization and flow chemistry facilities Martina research aims at developing sustainable and robust platforms for the preparation of synthetically challenging molecules spanning from bioactive compounds, food ingredients, APIs and other valuable chemicals.

Martina has published extensively and her research in biocatalysis has consistently attracted numerous collaborations. Her exceptional contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards. Highlights include the 2022 ChemBioChem Talent Award, the 2023 JSP Fellowship dedicated to the Scientific Leaders of the Next Generation to join the prestigious Bürgenstock Conference, and the 2024 “Alberto Ritieni” Confindustria Prize from the Food Chemistry Division for her outstanding presentation at the National SCI Congress.
